Islamic Religion teacher at SMAN 58 Jakarta instigated students "Don't Choose OSIS with Different Religions"

TS, an Islamic religion teacher at SMA Negeri 58 Jakarta, was finally reported to the police for encouraging his students not to elect a non-Muslim student council president. tS was reported to the East Jakarta Metro Police because the messages he sent via the WhatsApp group were deemed to have traits of SARA.

Previously, TS himself apologized and admitted that he regretted spreading the message of racial and intolerant tone to his students regarding the election of the Student Council President at school.

"The person concerned is sorry and has been asked to make an apology via video which is distributed to the school environment and is also asked to make an apology signed on a stamp duty," said Head of the East Jakarta Region II Education Sub-department, Gunas Mahdianto, as quoted fromAntara, Wednesday (4/11/2020).Gunas also said that TS had been examined regarding the message he sent to his students.

"It has been given guidance by the principal. The teacher is also in BAP, it has been reported to the office as well," he said.

Meanwhile, the Principal of SMAN 58 Dwi Arsono explained that initially TS only intended to convey statements to 44 SMAN 58 students who were members of the Rohani Islam (Rohis) 58 extracurricular via short messages. But one of the students told other students.

Not only that, TS then invited his students to pray for and support the candidate pair for OSIS Chair number 3 whose chairman and vice chairman are Muslim.

Very Regrettable

KPAI Commissioner for Education, Retno Listyarti assessed this case as proof that respect for diversity is starting to fade in Indonesia.

"In fact, public schools should be a place for diversity because the students are very diverse," said Retno.

"If the teacher teaches hatred for diversity, that hatred will really manifest among students and become a culture in schoolsbecause what the teacher teaches the students hear, "added Retno.

Chairman of the PDI-P Faction of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Gembong Warsono, regretted that the form of punishment against TS was only in the form of a warning.

"It should be implemented in accordance with Article 4 point (a), namely upholding the Pancasila ideology and point (d) carrying out duties in a professional and impartial manner. This is so that it does not happen again in the future," said Gembong.
